UEFA Chief Ceferin Warns Infantino: Resign or Face March Challenge

Aleksander Ceferin, president of European football's governing body UEFA, has delivered an ultimatum to FIFA President Gianni Infantino: either acknowledge the loss of support within the football community and resign, or prepare for a leadership challenge at FIFA elections scheduled for March.

In an interview with British podcast "The Rest is Politics: Leading," Ceferin clarified he would not personally contest the FIFA presidency but suggested Infantino faces an untenable political position. "One option is that he realizes that he doesn't have the support, and that's not only political support of those who vote, but the political support of the football community, the political support of fans, the political support of the players, former players, coaches," Ceferin said.

Infantino's position has deteriorated significantly following his controversial proposal to sell stakes in the FIFA World Cup to private equity investors—a plan he has since abandoned. The initiative triggered fierce backlash from continental confederations across Africa, Asia, and Europe. Three confederations formally accused Infantino of "deception," while UEFA explicitly threatened to boycott FIFA competitions over the proposal.

Ceferin's remarks reflect deepening fractures within world football's leadership. The UEFA president's conditional stance—neither confirming nor denying his own candidacy—suggests negotiations continue behind the scenes over the FIFA presidency succession. The March elections will determine whether Infantino secures another term or faces a challenger backed by major football constituencies.
