The compensation scheme reflects UEFA's acknowledgment of the burden placed on domestic clubs during international fixtures. Club football operations are disrupted when key players depart for national team duties, and the financial support aims to mitigate these challenges.
The Nations League, which serves as Europe's primary international football competition outside traditional World Cup and European Championship qualifiers, has grown in prominence since its inception in 2018. The competition features all 55 UEFA member associations divided into four leagues based on their competitive rankings.
The distribution of funds underscores the ongoing negotiations between club football and international governing bodies over player availability and compensation.
