Ian Escuza defeated Luca Borando in spectacular fashion during week eight of the UFC Contender Series, finishing the bout in just 32 seconds. However, the quick victory has become the subject of debate within combat sports circles due to the circumstances surrounding the knockout.
The pivotal moment came when Escuza landed what appeared to be an illegal knee strike to Borando while his opponent was grounded. Under unified MMA rules, striking a downed opponent with the knee is prohibited. Despite this, referee Herb Dean allowed the bout to conclude without intervention, and the result was permitted to stand.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), which oversees combat sports in the state, did not overturn the decision. UFC president Dana White subsequently weighed in on the controversial finish, though his full comments on the matter were not immediately detailed.
