Uganda's pioneering wildlife veterinarian champions gorilla conservation through community action

Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka's career represents a breakthrough for wildlife conservation in East Africa, combining veterinary expertise with community-centered development initiatives. As Uganda's inaugural female wildlife veterinarian, she has focused her professional efforts on protecting the country's endangered mountain gorilla population while addressing the interconnected health challenges affecting both animals and local communities.

Through her organization, Conservation Through Public Health, Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka has implemented programmes that tackle health concerns affecting gorillas and neighbouring human populations simultaneously. This integrated approach recognizes that wildlife protection cannot succeed in isolation from community welfare, establishing a model where conservation and public health initiatives reinforce one another.

Recognizing the economic pressures facing rural communities living alongside gorilla habitats, Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka founded Gorilla Conservation Coffee, an enterprise that provides sustainable income to local farmers. The initiative promotes environmentally responsible coffee cultivation while generating revenue streams that reduce pressure on forest resources, effectively aligning economic incentives with habitat preservation.

Her work underscores a fundamental principle in modern conservation: that lasting environmental protection requires active participation and tangible benefits for local populations. By creating economic opportunities tied directly to gorilla habitat preservation, Dr. Kalema-Zikusoka has demonstrated that wildlife conservation and community development need not be competing priorities. Her multifaceted approach has established a template for how veterinary science, community engagement, and sustainable enterprise can converge to protect endangered species across South and Southeast Asia's biodiversity hotspots.
