The University Grants Commission (UGC) has reported robust participation in the National Eligibility Test (NET) scheduled for December 2026, with registrations surpassing the 5 lakh mark. The examination, conducted twice annually, serves as a gateway for candidates aspiring to secure positions as lecturers and junior research fellows across Indian universities and research institutions.
However, the exam body flagged a compliance issue among a section of registered candidates. According to the UGC, approximately 1.36 lakh aspirants have not yet uploaded their photograph and signature—mandatory components of the application process. These candidates have also failed to complete their fee payments, leaving their registrations in an incomplete state.
The pending documentation and fee submissions represent a notable administrative challenge for the examination authority as the test date approaches. Candidates are typically required to fulfill all registration requirements within a stipulated timeframe to maintain their eligibility for the examination.
The UGC NET assesses the eligibility of Indian nationals for the positions of Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship across universities and higher educational institutions. The December 2026 examination will be conducted in online mode across multiple subjects and disciplines, drawing aspirants from across the country seeking to advance their academic and research careers.
