UIDAI streamlines Aadhaar name changes with new tiered framework

The UIDAI has restructured its approach to Aadhaar name modifications by dividing requests into two distinct categories—minor and major changes—each with tailored documentation requirements and approval pathways.

Minor name changes, typically involving corrections to spelling errors, transposition of characters, or similar formatting adjustments, will require a less stringent documentation process compared to substantive alterations. Major changes, which encompass significant name modifications such as post-marriage surname changes, religious name adoptions, or complete name alterations, will demand more comprehensive proof and verification procedures.

Under the revised rules, applicants seeking minor corrections will need to submit supporting documents alongside affidavits explaining the discrepancy. Major name changes, however, will require additional evidence including Gazette notifications or legal order documents, depending on the nature of the modification. The tiered approach is designed to expedite processing for straightforward corrections while ensuring robust verification for more substantial identity modifications.

The authority has clarified that all name change requests must be supported by appropriate affidavits notarized in accordance with Indian law. The framework provides clear guidelines on which documents constitute sufficient proof for each category, reducing ambiguity and streamlining the amendment process for Aadhaar holders across the country.
