Ujjain relocates temples, demolishes shrines ahead of 2028 Kumbh Mela

Road widening work is progressing rapidly in Ujjain as part of infrastructure development ahead of the 2028 Maha Kumbh Simhastha, with authorities removing numerous religious sites and residential structures from the project corridor.

According to local administration reports, 14 out of 12 identified religious structures have been relocated or demolished to facilitate the expansion work. The displacements include the shifting of a temple by approximately 9-9 feet and the partial removal of the historic Shahi Mosque, which has drawn heightened security measures during the operation.

The relocation efforts are being carried out with cooperation between municipal authorities and local communities. Officials have prioritized the systematic documentation and careful handling of displaced structures to minimize disruption to residents and the faithful.

The Maha Kumbh Simhastha, one of Hinduism's largest religious gatherings, is expected to draw millions of pilgrims to Ujjain in 2028. State authorities have initiated multiple infrastructure projects including road widening, facility upgrades, and sanitation improvements to accommodate the anticipated influx of visitors.
