UK charity transforms food waste crisis into 10 million meals

What began as a single-van operation has evolved into a comprehensive food rescue initiative, with UKHarvest salvaging over 10 million meals since its inception. Founder Yvonne Thomson established the charity to tackle the dual challenge of mounting food waste and growing food insecurity, creating a sustainable model that benefits both suppliers and communities in need.

The organisation's reach extends beyond simple food redistribution. UKHarvest operates Community Food Hubs and Grub Clubs that provide not only affordable meals but also nutritional education and cooking skills training. This holistic approach addresses immediate food needs while building long-term resilience within vulnerable communities.

Operating on a significant scale, UKHarvest currently collects approximately 10 tonnes of excess food from retailers, wholesalers, and food producers on a weekly basis. The recovered produce, which would otherwise end up in landfills, is redistributed through its network of community centres and local organisations.

The charity's efforts have gained recognition from prominent figures, with royal patronage amplifying its visibility and impact. This support underscores the growing awareness of food waste as both an environmental and social justice issue, positioning UKHarvest as a model for other regions grappling with similar challenges.
