UK Collector's £20 Car Boot Find Yields £63,440 Superman Comics Haul

The collector's fortuitous discovery began when he purchased an unremarkable box of comics at a car boot sale for just £20. The box languished largely forgotten in his loft until the pandemic prompted him to catalogue his collection more thoroughly through online research.

Upon closer examination and consultation with experts, he identified the true value of his acquisition: a series of rare Superman editions that had been specially commissioned for a family bar mitzvah celebration in 1988. The specificity of the original commission and the condition of the comics made them particularly sought-after by collectors.

The 47-issue collection eventually went under the hammer at auction, where bidding exceeded expectations dramatically. The final sale price of £63,440 represented an extraordinary return on the initial £20 investment—a more than 3,000-fold increase in value.

The sale underscores the potential hidden value in vintage comic collections, particularly those with unique provenance or limited circulation. For collectors and bargain hunters alike, the sale serves as a reminder that valuable treasures can sometimes be found in unexpected places.
