UK imposes sanctions on Israeli West Bank settlements, bans settlement goods

The United Kingdom has introduced a sweeping sanctions regime targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, marking a significant shift in Britain's approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced the measures in Parliament, stating that the government would implement an import ban on goods originating from settlements deemed illegal under international law.

Miliband, who emphasised his own Jewish heritage, told MPs that Britain's economic relationships must reflect its position on the legality of the occupation. "The government believes the unlawfulness of the occupation should be reflected in the economic relationships we choose to have with the occupied territories," he said during his Commons statement.

The sanctions regime includes targeted action against specific companies and individuals involved in supporting settlements through construction, infrastructure development, financing, and real estate activities. Prime Minister Andy Burnham joined Miliband in the House of Commons to underscore the government's condemnation of what officials described as the "ethnic cleansing of Palestinians" in West Bank settlements.

The announcement reflects growing international pressure on Israel's settlement expansion in occupied Palestinian territories. The UK's measures include provisions for religious exemptions within the broader sanctions framework, though full details of implementation remain to be outlined.
