UK imposes sanctions on Sudanese military commanders for sexual violence

The United Kingdom has sanctioned multiple military commanders from Sudan's rival armed forces in response to documented cases of weaponised sexual violence during the country's ongoing conflict. The measures include travel restrictions and the freezing of assets for individuals from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

The sanctions represent Britain's response to evidence of systematic rape being employed as a tactic of war in Sudan. Sexual violence has emerged as a widespread feature of the conflict that has displaced millions and created a severe humanitarian crisis across the region.

The designations add to international pressure on both military factions to halt atrocities against civilians. Multiple organisations have documented allegations of organised sexual assault by fighters from both sides of the conflict, which has devastated civilian populations in several states including Darfur and Khartoum.

The British government has indicated that individuals responsible for orchestrating or perpetrating sexual violence will face continued international accountability. The sanctions regime may be expanded as additional evidence of abuse emerges from conflict-affected areas.
