UK, India must accelerate healthcare innovation rollout, minister says

UK Health Minister James Frith called for closer Anglo-Indian cooperation to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and real-world healthcare implementation, addressing the Westminster Diwali gathering organised by India Global Forum in London.

Speaking more than 100 days after the bilateral Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement came into force in mid-July, Frith identified innovation adoption as the critical frontier for healthcare systems in both countries. "The next great challenge in healthcare innovation is not simply discovery, but adoption," he said, noting that while both nations excel at generating breakthroughs, translating those advances into widespread patient benefit remains elusive.

Frith underscored complementary strengths that could be harnessed through deepened collaboration. India possesses exceptional capabilities in digital innovation and large-scale population delivery systems, he noted, while Britain contributes world-leading research and life sciences expertise. The minister suggested that combining these capabilities could accelerate the pace at which medical innovations reach patients across both nations.

The remarks reflect growing emphasis on healthcare cooperation as a pillar of the India-UK economic partnership, with both countries seeking to leverage their respective advantages to address shared challenges in delivering medical advances to broader populations.
