The head of Britain's Security Service has warned that threats to national security from hostile state actors have increased dramatically over the past decade. Sir Ken McCallum stated that MI5 is now devoting more personnel and resources to countering state-level threats than during the height of Cold War tensions, reflecting a fundamental shift in the threat landscape facing the United Kingdom.

Russia has been identified as the primary security concern, with McCallum describing the country as "aggressor number one" in terms of threats to British interests. The assessment reflects Moscow's pattern of aggressive actions against Western nations, from cyber operations to espionage activities.

Beyond Russian threats, MI5 has also documented a marked increase in Iran-linked hostile activities targeting Jewish communities and military installations within the UK. The intelligence service has noted a concerning trend of state-sponsored aggression linked to Tehran, adding another dimension to the complex security environment facing Britain.

The agency's expanded focus also encompasses emerging threats posed by artificial intelligence capabilities, which intelligence officials view as a potential national security concern. The convergence of traditional state-sponsored threats and emerging technologies has prompted Britain's intelligence community to reassess its operational priorities and resource allocation.
