UK PM Burnham Says Russia Interfered in 2016 Brexit Vote

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has declared that Russia interfered with Britain's 2016 referendum on European Union membership, emphasizing the importance of documenting Moscow's alleged tampering as a warning to other democracies.

In remarks from the podcast "The Rest is Politics," Burnham said he sought clarity on the matter upon becoming prime minister in July. "I've had the clear answer that yes, there was" Russian interference, he stated, according to excerpts released Sunday ahead of the podcast's full publication on Monday.

Burnham stressed the significance of placing Russia's alleged meddling on the official record, noting that voters in Germany, France and elsewhere should understand that foreign adversaries may be stoking political divisions. "These things are important now to put clearly on the record and I believe help voters in Germany and France understand that some of this politics is instigated via our enemies, namely Russia," he said.

The comments align with growing concerns from UK intelligence agencies about Russian interference in British democratic institutions. Moscow has consistently denied allegations of electoral meddling, maintaining it does not interfere in other nations' voting processes.

Burnham's remarks underscore ongoing tensions between London and Moscow over election security, a concern that has intensified across multiple democracies in recent years.
