In 2016, environmental teams undertook a major restoration initiative on Swindale Beck in England's Lake District, removing the artificial straightening that had been imposed on the waterway two centuries earlier. The project involved reinstating the river's natural meandering course, undoing extensive channelisation work that had been carried out to facilitate agricultural and industrial use.

The results emerged swiftly. Within months of the restoration work, Atlantic salmon returned to the beck to spawn in the newly restored gravel beds, a clear indicator of ecological recovery. The reintroduction of natural curves and flow patterns created diverse habitats that attracted aquatic insects and river birds, fundamentally transforming the ecosystem.

Beyond wildlife benefits, the project delivered practical advantages for local communities. The restored natural flow reduced flood risks in surrounding areas while simultaneously improving water quality for millions of residents who depend on the catchment for drinking water supplies. The multi-benefit approach demonstrated how environmental restoration can address conservation, flood management, and public health priorities simultaneously.

The project's success was formally recognised when the river restoration won the UK River Prize in 2022, highlighting the effectiveness of reversing historical engineering modifications to restore natural river systems.
