UK tightens study visa rules, forcing universities to rescind offers to Indians
British universities are withdrawing course offers to international students, including Indians, as the UK Home Office tightens restrictions on student visa approvals. The measure aims to prevent what the government views as misuse of the student visa route.

Universities across Britain are revoking offers to prospective international students amid heightened scrutiny of visa applications by the UK Home Office. Analysis of official data reveals that institutions are taking defensive action to avoid potential recruitment bans, a consequence of increasingly stringent visa approval standards.
Under new rules introduced by the Home Office, universities face a blanket ban on recruiting international students if more than 5 per cent of those offered places subsequently have their visa applications rejected. This represents a significant tightening from the previous 10 per cent threshold, creating substantial pressure on higher education institutions to be more selective at the offer stage.
The policy shift targets what the UK government considers abuse of the student visa system, with particular focus on nationals from Pakistan and Nigeria. However, the new restrictions are expected to affect prospective students from multiple countries, including India, one of the largest sources of international students to UK universities.
Analysts have raised concerns about the implementation of these rules, citing reports of inconsistent decision-making by visa authorities. The combination of stricter thresholds and subjective visa assessments has prompted universities to withdraw offers preemptively, effectively raising admission barriers for international candidates seeking to study in Britain.
