UKM climbs into Asia's elite universities while UM slips in rankings

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has achieved a significant milestone by breaking into the top 20 universities across Asia, according to the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027 released this week.

The ranking update, however, revealed a broader slowdown in Malaysian university performance, with 25 of the nation's institutions experiencing position drops compared to the previous year's assessment. Despite this overall decline, the results contained some positive developments, with 17 Malaysian universities achieving their highest-ever rankings in the QS Asia standings.

Universiti Malaya (UM), historically among Malaysia's top-performing institutions, saw its position slip to 17th place in the Asia rankings. The decline underscores intensifying competition from universities across the region as higher education standards continue to rise throughout South and Southeast Asia.

The mixed results highlight the competitive pressures facing Malaysian universities in the region's increasingly crowded academic landscape. While UKM's entry into Asia's top 20 represents a success story for the institution, the broader trend of declining positions among most Malaysian universities suggests challenges in maintaining regional competitiveness.

Education analysts have noted that the rankings reflect institutions' performance across multiple criteria including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty, and international diversity metrics.
