Ukraine caught off guard as Russia unleashes massive missile and drone barrage
Russia has launched a major coordinated assault on Ukraine, deploying 16 ballistic missiles against Kyiv and surrounding areas alongside more than 200 unmanned aerial vehicles across the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated authorities received no advance warning of the large-scale attack.

Russia mounted one of its most substantial aerial bombardments in recent weeks, striking the Ukrainian capital and its vicinity with ballistic missiles while simultaneously deploying hundreds of drones across multiple regions of the country. The scale of the assault underscored Moscow's continued capacity to conduct complex, multi-pronged military operations despite months of sustained conflict.
President Zelensky's statement that Ukraine received no prior intelligence of the imminent attack highlights the challenges Ukrainian air defences face in detecting and intercepting such coordinated strikes. The use of both ballistic missiles and drones in a single operation presents particular difficulties for defensive systems, which must contend with multiple threats arriving simultaneously across different vectors.
The bombardment added to the humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict, which has displaced millions of Ukrainians and caused widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure. Russia has repeatedly targeted Kyiv and other major population centres throughout the conflict, often focusing on energy facilities and other critical infrastructure.
Ukrainian military officials have not yet released preliminary damage assessments or casualty figures from the latest assault. The incident demonstrates the persistent threat posed by Russian aerial capabilities and the continued strain on Ukrainian defences despite international military support.
