Ukraine's military has begun deploying AI-enabled robotic weapons to intercept Russian drones that have been conducting sustained attacks on the Ukrainian capital and other urban centres. The move comes after months of Kyiv searching for effective countermeasures against unmanned aerial vehicles that have increasingly targeted critical infrastructure and civilian areas.
The automated gun systems use artificial intelligence to detect, track and engage incoming drones with greater speed and precision than traditional air defence methods. Ukrainian officials have characterised the technology as essential to protecting urban populations from the relentless drone campaign that has become a defining feature of the Russian assault.
The deployment reflects broader efforts by Ukraine to leverage advanced technology in asymmetric warfare against a larger military opponent. As Russia continues to develop and deploy new drone variants, Ukrainian forces have accelerated efforts to acquire and integrate cutting-edge defence systems capable of responding to emerging threats.
The conflict has increasingly become a testing ground for autonomous weapons systems and artificial intelligence applications in modern warfare. Military analysts say the integration of such technologies by both sides underscores how the nature of armed conflict continues to evolve in the digital age.
