Ukraine passes landmark legislation to accelerate EU membership process

Ukraine's legislative body voted Monday to enact reforms deemed essential for progressing the nation's EU membership application. The passage represents a significant step in Kyiv's efforts to meet Copenhagen Criteria and other requirements set by Brussels for candidate nations seeking accession to the 27-member union.

President Zelensky subsequently signed the legislation, formalising Ukraine's commitment to the legal and institutional changes demanded by EU member states. The moves address longstanding concerns regarding governance, judicial independence, and anti-corruption measures that have featured prominently in accession negotiations.

Ukraine formally applied for EU membership in 2022 following Russia's invasion, with the bloc granting candidate status in June that year. The country has since undertaken comprehensive reforms to align its legal framework and administrative structures with European standards, though analysts note substantial work remains before full membership becomes possible.

The latest legislative action signals Kyiv's determination to maintain momentum in EU integration efforts despite ongoing security challenges. Ukrainian officials have emphasised that EU membership represents both a strategic security anchor and an opportunity for long-term economic development and democratic consolidation.
