Ukraine's Ex-Defence Minister Calls for Wartime Elections Amid Governance Row
Mykhailo Fedorov, recently ousted from his defence portfolio, has demanded Ukraine hold elections despite the ongoing Russian invasion, citing a deepening governance crisis. The appeal represents a significant challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from within his own inner circle.

In a video address posted Tuesday, Fedorov called for Ukraine to establish a legal framework allowing democratic elections to proceed even as the country battles Russian forces. "We must find a legal, safe, and realistic mechanism that will allow Ukraine to restore a full democratic process even amid a prolonged war," he stated.
Fedorov's intervention marks the most substantial internal dissent Zelenskyy has confronted since Russia's invasion began in February 2022. As one of the president's most trusted associates until his removal in July, Fedorov's public criticism carries considerable political weight within Ukrainian leadership circles.
The former defence minister argued that Ukraine faces a systemic governance crisis under the current framework. Ukrainian law currently prohibits elections while martial law remains in effect—a status imposed on February 24, 2022, and maintained throughout the conflict.
The Zelenskyy administration has not yet responded publicly to Fedorov's address. His call for electoral processes during wartime challenges existing legal constraints and raises questions about how Ukraine can balance military necessity with democratic accountability during protracted conflict.
