Ukraine's largest nuclear plant loses external power supply

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine has lost its connection to external power sources, forcing the facility to rely entirely on backup diesel generators to maintain operations, according to international nuclear regulators.

The loss of grid connection poses significant operational challenges for the plant, which requires continuous power supply to cool reactor cores and maintain essential safety systems. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the development and noted that emergency protocols have been activated.

Plant management has flagged a urgent concern regarding fuel availability. Current diesel reserves are sufficient for approximately ten days of continuous operation at present consumption rates, creating a narrow window for restoring external power or securing additional fuel supplies.

The situation underscores ongoing infrastructure vulnerabilities at the facility amid broader regional instability. Ukrainian authorities and international energy officials have called for urgent measures to stabilise the plant's power situation and prevent potential safety complications.
