Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has signalled optimism that Democratic performance in the US midterm elections could translate into stronger political support for his war-torn nation. In remarks broadcast by German public television ZDF, Zelensky stressed the importance of continued American assistance as Ukraine battles Russian forces.

"I am grateful to the Republicans, but the Democrats speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine and providing assistance," Zelensky said in comments released ahead of the electoral contest. The statement underscores Kyiv's dependence on bipartisan American support, even as the two major US political parties have shown differing levels of enthusiasm for continued aid to Ukraine.

The United States has emerged as one of Ukraine's most significant military and financial backers since Russia's invasion in February 2022. Congressional approval remains critical for the flow of weapons systems, humanitarian aid, and financial support that Ukraine relies upon to sustain its defence.

Zelensky's remarks reflect broader concerns in Kyiv about the trajectory of American political support, particularly as some Republican lawmakers have questioned the scale and duration of US military aid to Ukraine. Democratic victory in the midterms could provide more stable backing for Ukraine policy in the coming years, analysts suggest.
