Ukraine strikes Russian oil terminals in massive 1,000-drone assault

Ukrainian drone strikes set the Petersburg Oil Terminal and Ruchi oil depot ablaze in Russia's second-largest city on Sunday, marking one of Kyiv's most extensive aerial operations to date. The attacks, coordinated across Russian territory, involved more than 1,000 unmanned vehicles targeting oil export facilities and other infrastructure. The strikes killed at least one person and wounded five others, according to St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov. A logistics center operated by major Russian retailer Ozon and a data center belonging to technology company VK were also damaged in the assault, both firms confirmed.

Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed its air defenses successfully intercepted 1,015 Ukrainian drones across 15 regions, as well as over Crimea and the Black Sea. The strikes represent an escalation in Ukraine's campaign against Russian energy infrastructure, which has been a focal point of Kyiv's military strategy throughout the ongoing conflict.

The drone assault occurs amid heightened tensions between Ukraine and the United States, with U.S. President Donald Trump criticizing Kyiv's strikes against Russian oil facilities. The diplomatic friction underscores broader disagreements over military strategy and the scope of permissible Ukrainian operations against Russian territory.
