Ukraine, Trump camps signal optimism despite deep policy rifts

The embrace between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Steve Witkoff, a senior adviser to Donald Trump, during talks in Norway's capital has been interpreted by some observers as a thaw in relations between Kyiv and the incoming Trump administration. The informal encounter marked a rare moment of apparent cordiality between the two camps after months of public friction over the future direction of American military and financial support for Ukraine.

Yet analysts caution that the symbolic gesture is unlikely to bridge the substantive policy disagreements that have created tension between Zelensky and Trump's circle. The Trump team has signaled skepticism about the scale and duration of US commitment to Ukraine's defense, while Ukrainian officials fear a shift toward pressure for territorial concessions or a negotiated settlement that would disadvantage Kyiv.

These fundamental divergences reflect competing priorities: the Trump administration's focus on reducing American overseas commitments and military spending versus Ukraine's existential security needs in the face of Russian aggression. Unless concrete steps are taken to align these positions, diplomatic gestures alone are unlikely to resolve the underlying strategic differences.

The meeting in Oslo, while symbolically important, has done little to clarify what a Trump-led US policy toward Ukraine would actually entail. Both sides have maintained measured rhetoric in public, but uncertainty persists about whether a modus vivendi can be reached that satisfies the core concerns of both Washington and Kyiv.
