A drone attack attributed to Ukrainian forces struck St Petersburg early on Wednesday, hitting energy infrastructure and resulting in at least one fatality, according to Russian authorities. The strike targeted critical facilities in the northwestern city, though the full extent of damage to the energy sector remained unclear.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces conducted overnight attacks across Ukraine that killed at least two people. He accused Moscow of repeatedly violating an informal ceasefire agreement on energy infrastructure, a pact that has been under strain as both nations conduct regular strikes on each other's power grids and industrial facilities.
The tit-for-tat strikes underscore the intensifying asymmetric warfare between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides targeting infrastructure far from active battlelines. Ukraine has increasingly employed long-range drones to strike Russian energy facilities and military installations, while Russia continues systematic attacks on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure.
Energy infrastructure has emerged as a primary target in the conflict, with both nations suffering significant damage to power generation and distribution networks. Zelenskyy's references to violations of energy agreements suggest repeated attempts by both sides to negotiate some form of restraint in targeting civilian infrastructure have largely failed.
