Ukrainian tennis player loses home to Russian strike, saves Roland Garros towel

Dayana Yastremska, a professional tennis player representing Ukraine on the international circuit, disclosed that her residential flat in the Black Sea port city of Odesa sustained a direct hit from a Russian missile strike. The attack left the apartment heavily damaged, with the player able to recover very few personal belongings from the destruction.

According to Yastremska, among the few items that survived the strike was a towel bearing the Roland Garros insignia—the commemorative towel from tennis's prestigious French Open tournament. The stark contrast between the total devastation of her home and the survival of this single memento underscores the indiscriminate nature of the bombardment affecting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

The strike on Yastremska's residence reflects the broader pattern of Russian missile attacks targeting residential areas in Ukrainian cities, particularly in Odesa, which has faced repeated aerial assaults since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Civilian apartment buildings have been repeatedly struck, resulting in significant loss of life and rendering thousands homeless.

Yastremska, who competes professionally in international tennis tournaments, has previously spoken about the impact of the war on her career and personal life.
