UltraTech crosses 2 GW green energy capacity milestone

UltraTech Cement has commissioned a 116.55-megawatt wind energy project in Barmer, Rajasthan, pushing its total installed green energy capacity to 2,024 MW, the Aditya Birla Group flagship announced on Monday. The milestone makes UltraTech the first cement manufacturer in India to operate such a substantial captive renewable energy portfolio.

The company simultaneously brought online 10 MW of Waste Heat Recovery System capacity at its Sarlanagar Cement Works facility in Karnataka, complementing its broader renewable energy expansion strategy. UltraTech's current green capacity comprises 1,580 MW from renewable sources and 444 MW from waste heat recovery systems.

According to the company, this installed capacity currently meets approximately 48 per cent of UltraTech's overall power requirements, substantially reducing the firm's reliance on grid electricity and conventional energy sources. The achievement reflects the company's multi-pronged approach to energy transition, combining wind power, solar installations, and industrial heat recovery technologies.

The expansion aligns with growing industry recognition that large industrial manufacturers must transition toward cleaner energy sources to enhance operational sustainability and meet evolving environmental standards across South Asia's manufacturing sector.
