Umno remains hopeful that a pardon for former prime minister Najib Razak will be given fresh consideration, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said on Tuesday.
Zahid stressed that Umno fully respects the constitutional prerogative of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the formal procedures governing such matters. The party's position reflects its ongoing support for Najib despite his conviction on corruption-related charges.
The statement comes as Najib continues serving his sentence following his conviction in 2023. The former premier has maintained his innocence and has pursued various legal avenues, including appeals and clemency petitions.
Umno's continued backing of Najib underscores the party's internal dynamics and its historical ties to the former leader, who led the party for two decades before his political downfall in 2018. The party's stance signals that the matter remains politically sensitive within Umno's ranks.
