Umno open to PAS using BN logo in Melaka election, but not all PN allies

Umno will be selective about which Perikatan Nasional parties can contest under the Barisan Nasional banner in the upcoming Melaka state election, party leader Khaled Nordin said Wednesday.

KOTA TINGGI, Oct 3 — Umno signalled it would allow PAS to use the BN logo in the Melaka polls, but made clear the arrangement would not extend to all Perikatan Nasional coalition members.

The party's vice-president Khaled Nordin said Umno would take a case-by-case approach to determining which PN components could contest under the BN symbol in the state election. He did not specify which parties beyond PAS might qualify for such arrangements.

"We will be selective," Nordin told reporters at an event in Kota Tinggi. The statement underscored ongoing negotiations within the coalition over electoral mechanics and seat allocations as preparations for the Melaka polls continue.

The comments reflect broader efforts to manage relationships between BN's traditional members and PN partners, particularly PAS, as Malaysia's major political coalitions navigate shifting alliances ahead of state-level contests. Umno's willingness to discuss logo usage with PAS, while keeping other PN parties at arm's length, suggests the party is prioritising its relationship with the Islamic opposition-turned-ally.

No timeline was given for finalising arrangements, or details provided on which additional parties might be considered for similar treatment.
