Umno seeks one-third of seats in PAS-controlled states for unity

Nur Jazlan Mohamed, a member of Umno's Supreme Council, has proposed that PAS voluntarily contest fewer seats in the four states where it holds considerable political influence, allowing Umno to field candidates in approximately one-third of available positions.

The suggestion comes amid ongoing discussions within Malaysia's Malay-dominated political establishment about forging stronger electoral alliances. Nur Jazlan argued that if both parties were genuinely committed to unifying Malay-Muslim voters, PAS need not field candidates in every constituency across Terengganu, Kedah, Kelantan and Perlis.

The proposal reflects broader attempts by major Malay-based parties to present a more cohesive political front, though seat-sharing arrangements have historically proven contentious in Malaysian coalition politics. Such negotiations typically involve complex calculations regarding electoral viability and each party's perceived electoral strength in individual constituencies.

Umno and PAS have previously cooperated through various political arrangements, though their relationship has fluctuated between alliance and competition depending on broader political circumstances and leadership decisions within both organizations.
