UN Chief Condemns Cockpit Attack That Nearly Downed Dubai-Tel Aviv Flight

An Omani co-pilot allegedly stabbed Indian Captain Smit Machchhar during an altercation in the cockpit of the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, causing the aircraft to descend nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before the pilot regained control. The flydubai jet, carrying 174 people including 27 children, made an emergency landing at Tabuk airfield in northwest Saudi Arabia on Wednesday afternoon following the incident.

Guterres expressed deep concern over the attack and relief that the situation did not result in tragedy, according to a statement issued by his spokesman Stephane Dujarric. The UN chief underscored that such incidents pose serious risks to civilian lives and aviation safety globally.

The Secretary-General strongly condemned any act that endangers passengers and the integrity of civil aviation operations. Officials said the pilot sustained serious injuries while intervening to prevent what authorities characterize as an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft into a populated area.

The incident has reignited focus on security protocols in aircraft cockpits and the vetting procedures for flight crews operating international routes. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cockpit altercation and the alleged attacker's motivations.
