UN condemns Myanmar airstrike that killed 50 civilians

The airstrike targeted a market area in Rakhine State, a region in western Myanmar that has become a focal point of the ongoing conflict between the military and anti-coup armed groups. The death toll makes it among the most lethal aerial attacks recorded during the country's civil war, which erupted following the military's coup d'état in February 2021.

United Nations officials characterised the incident as emblematic of the "grave plight" facing ordinary Myanmar citizens caught in the crossfire. The bombardment underscores the intensifying humanitarian toll of the conflict, which has displaced hundreds of thousands and created acute shortages of food, medicine, and shelter across the country.

Rakhine State has experienced particularly intense fighting, with the conflict compounding long-standing humanitarian challenges in a region already marked by communal tensions and displacement. The airstrike comes as fighting between military forces and armed resistance groups shows no signs of abating, despite international calls for dialogue and ceasefire agreements.
