UN extends Darfur embargo as Russia, China block Sudan sanctions expansion
The United Nations Security Council has renewed an arms embargo on Sudan's Darfur region while blocking a broader proposal to extend weapons restrictions nationwide. Moscow and Beijing vetoed the expansion amid escalating conflict across the country.

The UN Security Council voted to maintain its longstanding arms embargo covering Sudan's western Darfur region on Thursday, marking a continued focus on one of Africa's most troubled areas. However, efforts to broaden the restrictions to encompass all of Sudan faced resistance from permanent members Russia and China, who prevented the measure from advancing.
The decision reflects deepening divisions within the Security Council over Sudan policy as fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group continues to devastate civilian populations. Western nations, particularly the United States, have sought to tighten arms restrictions nationwide to address what they characterize as a deteriorating humanitarian crisis.
Russia and China have historically resisted broader sanctions regimes against Sudan, citing concerns about sovereignty and objecting to what they view as interventionist approaches. Their opposition effectively stalled efforts to expand the existing Darfur embargo, which has been in place for nearly two decades following the conflict that displaced millions.
The renewal of the restricted embargo represents a compromise outcome but falls short of Western objectives to impose more comprehensive weapons controls. Aid organizations and human rights groups have warned that unchecked military supplies could prolong the conflict and worsen humanitarian suffering across Sudan.
