UN hits out at Russia over exclusion of anti-war party from elections

The UN's top human rights official has issued a sharp rebuke of Russia's electoral decisions, calling for the immediate restoration of fundamental democratic principles. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed deep concern over the exclusion of Yabloko, a longstanding opposition party, from upcoming elections.
The party's leader, Lev Shlosberg, has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison, primarily for statements criticising Russia's military actions. The imprisonment represents what rights advocates view as a severe crackdown on dissent and freedom of expression.
Turk's intervention underscores growing international criticism of Russia's treatment of political opposition and anti-war voices. The UN official emphasised that free and fair electoral processes require the participation of diverse political movements and the protection of citizens' rights to voice unpopular opinions.
