UN launches $50 million appeal for Nepal flood victims

The United Nations has announced a US$50 million appeal to support communities severely affected by flooding in Nepal last month. The appeal comes as the country grapples with the humanitarian consequences of the August 26 disaster, which displaced thousands and caused widespread infrastructure damage across multiple districts.

More than 84,000 people have been identified as requiring immediate assistance following the catastrophic floods. The affected population faces acute shortages of food, clean water, shelter, and medical supplies as rescue and relief operations continue across the impacted regions.

The UN's resident coordinator in Kathmandu has made an emotional call for swift international assistance, emphasizing the critical nature of the humanitarian crisis. The appeal aims to mobilize resources from the global community to support Nepal's government relief efforts and address immediate survival needs.

The funds sought through the appeal will support emergency response operations including search and rescue activities, provision of temporary shelter, distribution of food and water supplies, and restoration of essential services. Humanitarian agencies working in Nepal have warned that without rapid international support, the situation could deteriorate further as displaced communities face the onset of monsoon season complications.
