The United Nations has released a map that marks the disputed territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin with separate boundary lines representing Indian and Chinese positions. The map designates the eastern borders of Aksai Chin as the "Indian Line" while employing a "Chinese line" to demarcate the region separating Ladakh from Aksai Chin.
The cartographic approach reflects the complex territorial disagreements that have persisted between India and China in the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas. Both nations maintain conflicting claims over these areas, with India asserting sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh—which it administers as a state—while China contests the boundary demarcations established in colonial-era agreements.
The UN's decision to depict both territorial claims on a single map is intended to represent the positions of both parties to the dispute. Such dual-line representations are sometimes used by international bodies to acknowledge competing claims without endorsing either position.
The border dispute has been a source of tension between New Delhi and Beijing for decades, with occasional military confrontations underscoring the stakes involved. Efforts to resolve the matter through bilateral dialogue have continued, though no comprehensive agreement has been reached on the full extent of the disputed territories.
