UN Nuclear Watchdog Pushes Iran to Allow Inspections

The head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog has urged Iran to cooperate with international inspectors and grant them unfettered access to its nuclear sites, amid deepening concerns over Tehran's adherence to nuclear safeguards agreements.

The appeal follows a Security Council meeting convened after the International Atomic Energy Agency board passed a resolution last month referring Iran to the top UN body over allegations of nuclear non-compliance. The move marked a significant escalation in international scrutiny of Iran's atomic programme.

The IAEA chief stressed the importance of transparency and full cooperation from Tehran, stating that access to nuclear facilities and related documentation is essential for verifying that Iran's nuclear activities remain peaceful. The agency has faced mounting difficulties in conducting inspections and obtaining necessary information from Iranian authorities in recent months.

The dispute centres on Iran's obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the landmark 2015 nuclear accord. Tensions have mounted as Iran has progressively reduced its compliance with the agreement following the United States' 2018 withdrawal from the deal and subsequent reimposition of sanctions.

The Security Council's involvement signals increased international concern about the nuclear standoff and underscores the need for diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation in the region.
