UN panel flags India's concerns over citizenship processes, hate speech

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has raised concerns about India's handling of citizenship verification drives and communal tensions, according to reports of the committee's latest assessment. The panel has recommended that India suspend the National Register of Citizens, the citizenship documentation process that has been contentious since its implementation in Assam, and revise the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) programme, which has been conducted in West Bengal. According to the committee's observations, the SIR process has resulted in more than nine million people being disenfranchised in West Bengal, raising questions about the implementation and scope of the citizenship verification exercise. The committee's recommendations reflect growing international scrutiny of India's citizenship and documentation policies, particularly regarding their impact on vulnerable populations and electoral participation. India has previously defended both the NRC and SIR processes as legitimate exercises to maintain accurate citizenship and voter rolls, though civil society groups have raised concerns about procedural fairness and the inclusion of marginalized communities.
