UN Rights Office Flags Delhi Detentions, Demands Release of Protesters

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a statement expressing alarm at the detention of protesters in Delhi, urging the Indian government to secure their prompt release. The intervention highlights international concern over law enforcement responses to recent demonstrations in the capital.

In its statement, OHCHR emphasized that restrictions placed on citizens during protests must meet rigorous standards under international human rights law. Any such limitations must be demonstrably necessary and proportionate to the aims they seek to achieve, the body said, adding that blanket or excessive measures fall short of these requirements.

The statement underscores the right to peaceful assembly and protest as a fundamental democratic freedom. OHCHR called on Indian authorities to ensure that police handling of demonstrations remains consistent with international human rights obligations and domestic constitutional protections.

The intervention reflects broader global scrutiny of protest management practices across Asia, with human rights bodies regularly monitoring how governments balance public order concerns with citizens' freedoms of expression and assembly.
