UN Security Council condemns escalating Houthi strikes on Saudi airport

The UN Security Council issued a formal statement criticising the pattern of attacks attributed to Yemen's Houthi movement against King Fahd International Airport in Riyadh. The strikes, which have intensified over recent weeks, represent a significant escalation in cross-border hostilities affecting one of the Middle East's busiest aviation hubs.

Since the beginning of October, Riyadh's main international airport has endured more than 20 separate attacks. A particularly deadly assault occurred last weekend, resulting in at least 13 deaths and drawing renewed international concern about civilian safety and regional stability.

The Security Council's condemnation reflects broader concerns among world powers about the humanitarian implications and destabilising effects of the escalating military campaign. The attacks have raised questions about airport security and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to drone and missile strikes in the region.

The Houthi movement, based in Yemen, has previously claimed responsibility for similar strikes, citing grievances related to the ongoing conflict in the Arabian Peninsula. The renewed intensity of attacks underscores the persistence of tensions affecting air travel and economic activity across the Gulf region.
