UN seeks $50m for winter aid to 9 million vulnerable across four nations

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is targeting at least US$50 million to support vulnerable populations through the winter months as energy and food costs surge across conflict-affected regions. The appeal addresses critical needs in four countries where humanitarian crises have left millions dependent on external aid for survival during harsh seasonal conditions.

Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon and Afghanistan together account for approximately 9 million people requiring additional winter support, according to UNHCR assessments. In each nation, displaced populations and those living in poverty face mounting pressure from soaring prices for heating fuel and basic foodstuffs, compounding existing vulnerabilities.

The funding will support life-saving interventions including provision of winter clothing, heating materials and food assistance. UNHCR aims to reach the most at-risk groups, including internally displaced persons, refugees and host communities struggling with economic hardship.

The agency has emphasised that without timely international support, the humanitarian situation across these regions risks deteriorating further as winter temperatures drop. The appeal reflects growing concern among UN agencies about the convergence of conflict, climate impacts and global economic pressures affecting vulnerable populations in South and Southeast Asian regions and beyond.
