UN warns of mounting civilian toll as Yemen violence intensifies

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said civilians bear the heaviest burden from the ongoing conflict in Yemen, with recent casualties highlighting the humanitarian crisis gripping the Arabian Peninsula nation.
According to Turk's statement, the death toll since August includes 15 children among the 32 civilians killed, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the violence affecting non-combatants. The figures come as fighting has escalated in multiple parts of the country, raising concerns among international observers about the plight of Yemen's vulnerable population.
The UN rights office has consistently documented civilian casualties throughout Yemen's protracted conflict, which has created one of the world's worst humanitarian emergencies. The country's population faces widespread shortages of food, medicine and clean water, with healthcare systems largely non-functional across much of the nation.
Turk's latest remarks add to mounting pressure on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and allow unimpeded humanitarian access. International human rights organizations have called for accountability for violations and renewed diplomatic efforts to end the violence that has displaced millions of Yemenis from their homes.
