UN warns time running out to aid Yemen's besieged Taiz city

United Nations officials have issued urgent warnings that the window for delivering humanitarian assistance to Taiz is rapidly closing as the situation in the besieged Yemeni city reaches a critical juncture. The encirclement by Houthi forces has created severe bottlenecks in aid distribution, leaving hundreds of thousands of civilians facing acute shortages of food, medicine, and basic supplies.

The blockade, which intensified in early October, has effectively isolated more than 800,000 residents from the international aid infrastructure that has been attempting to sustain the population through Yemen's prolonged conflict. UN humanitarian agencies have expressed growing concern that the humanitarian toll will mount dramatically if access routes are not reopened soon.

The restrictions on movement and supply deliveries compound existing challenges in Taiz, which has suffered extensive damage and civilian displacement throughout Yemen's civil war. Aid organizations have warned that vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and the chronically ill, face heightened risks as medical facilities struggle to operate without adequate resources.

UN officials have called for immediate negotiations to restore humanitarian corridors into the city. The international community has urged all parties to the conflict to prioritize civilian welfare and permit unimpeded passage of aid convoys to prevent a further deterioration of an already dire humanitarian emergency.
