MANILA — Undersecretary David Almirol has defended the award of P1.55 billion in e-government contracts now subject to investigation, stating there was no conflict of interest in channeling the work to firms belonging to PLDT, the country's dominant telecommunications provider.
Almirol maintained his position that the contracts were appropriately awarded to PLDT-affiliated companies, emphasizing that the conglomerate has maintained extensive business relationships with government agencies and the private sector for decades. The official stressed that the company's established track record in serving the state qualified it for the assignments.
The contracts have drawn scrutiny from various quarters, prompting an investigation into the procurement process and the circumstances surrounding their allocation. Officials have sought to address concerns about whether proper procedures were followed in awarding such substantial government deals.
The PLDT Group remains the Philippines' largest telecommunications operator, with extensive infrastructure and service capabilities across the archipelago. The current controversy underscores ongoing discussions about government procurement practices and the need for transparency in major contracts.
