UNHCR card holders must secure work permits, Malaysia warns

Refugees carrying United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards must obtain proper work permits before taking employment in Malaysia, the immigration department has cautioned. Immigration Director-General Zakaria Shaaban stated that possession of UNHCR documentation does not exempt individuals from Malaysia's employment regulations. The clarification comes as authorities seek to ensure compliance with labour laws governing foreign workers in the country. Only two specific exemptions apply to UNHCR card holders, according to Shaaban: those lacking valid travel documents or entry passes, and individuals facing overstaying violations. The department's stance underscores Malaysia's commitment to maintaining consistent employment standards across all foreign nationals, regardless of their refugee status or documentation held. Individuals seeking to work in Malaysia are advised to consult immigration authorities regarding the proper permit application procedures.
