Unhealthy air quality spreads across Malaysia as Sarawak bears brunt

Serian in Sarawak reported the worst conditions, posting an API level of 194, which falls within the unhealthy category and poses health risks to vulnerable populations. The pollution has extended beyond Sarawak's borders, affecting communities in the peninsula's west coast and northern regions. Residents in Selangor, Kedah, and Penang are among those experiencing degraded air quality, raising concerns about potential health impacts across the region. The spread of haze to multiple states suggests transboundary air pollution, which typically occurs during seasonal periods when atmospheric conditions trap pollutants. Health authorities have advised residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions and elderly individuals, to limit outdoor activities and use appropriate protective measures during the period of poor air quality.
