UNICEF: 20 million children victimised by online sexual abuse annually

An estimated 20 million children worldwide experience online sexual abuse in a single year, according to new research by UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund. The alarming figure underscores the pervasive threat posed by predators operating in digital environments where children increasingly spend their time.

The scale of the problem reflects both the growing accessibility of internet-connected devices across the globe and the relative ease with which offenders can target vulnerable youngsters online. Children in developing regions, including parts of South and Southeast Asia, face heightened risks due to limited digital literacy, inadequate safeguarding infrastructure, and gaps in law enforcement capacity.

UNICEF's findings highlight the need for comprehensive action from multiple stakeholders, including technology companies, governments, and civil society organisations. Experts emphasise that effective responses require better reporting mechanisms, improved age verification systems, enhanced digital literacy programmes, and stronger legal frameworks criminalising online child sexual exploitation.

The study comes as internet usage among children continues to expand rapidly, particularly following the global shift toward remote learning and digital connectivity. Advocates stress that protecting children online demands coordinated efforts across borders, given the transnational nature of digital abuse.
