The United States has begun direct engagement with Myanmar's military generals, reversing a long period of diplomatic distance that followed the armed forces' assumption of power. A State Department spokesperson confirmed that American officials are now holding discussions with Myanmar's military leadership on issues of concern to Washington.
The decision to restart direct talks represents a pragmatic reassessment of US policy toward the Southeast Asian nation. Officials indicated that the dialogue covers matters affecting American interests in the region, including security concerns and broader geopolitical developments.
This diplomatic overture comes as Myanmar remains under military control following the 2021 coup that deposed the democratically elected government. The junta has faced international criticism over its handling of the post-coup period, including allegations of human rights violations.
The US State Department emphasized that engagement with Myanmar's military does not constitute a normalization of relations or endorsement of the junta's actions. Rather, officials characterised the talks as part of a broader approach to maintain channels of communication with all significant actors in Myanmar, consistent with American regional interests.
