KUALA LUMPUR — Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi said Tuesday that relations among parties in Malaysia's unity government remain stable following the issuance of a conditional pardon to former Prime Minister Najib Razak. Zahid's reassurance addresses concerns that the controversial decision could strain the delicate political coalition that has governed the country since 2022.
The conditional pardon, which reduced Najib's 12-year prison sentence for corruption-related charges, has been a contentious issue within the government structure. However, Zahid indicated that coalition partners have accepted the decision without significant discord.
"The unity government continues to function effectively," Zahid stated, emphasizing the commitment of all coalition members to maintaining stability and governance. He noted that differences of opinion on individual matters do not undermine the broader partnership.
The pardon was granted under Article 128 of the Federal Constitution, which allows the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to exercise clemency powers. Najib had been serving time at Kajang Prison following his conviction in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, one of Malaysia's most significant corruption cases.
The decision reflects ongoing efforts by the government to balance political sensitivities while maintaining institutional cooperation among its diverse coalition partners.
